AI disclosure and responsibility

Our work is prepared by AI and reviewed by AI

No human prepares or reviews your work. Your firm reviews the work and is responsible for it.

The short version. AI prepares the work. AI reviews the work. No person at AnnualsAI prepares or checks it. A person from our team is involved only when you sign up: to get your access in place, set the AI up to your firm's policies, and fix anything that is not working the way you want. After that, no person is involved in the day-to-day work, and no person prepares, reviews or signs off your work. Your firm must review the work and is responsible for it. We never file or lodge anything with IRD or the ATO.

Who prepares the work

All work is prepared by artificial intelligence (AI). This includes financial statements, income tax returns, workpapers, GST returns, BAS and bookkeeping.

Who reviews the work

AI reviews the work before we deliver it. No human prepares, reviews or approves the work at any stage. A person from our team is involved only when you sign up: to get your access in place, set the AI up to your firm's policies, and fix anything that is not working the way you want. After that, no person is involved in the day-to-day work, and no person prepares, reviews or signs off your work.

We are not your firm's accountant, and we do not sign off any work.

AI can make mistakes

AI can misread a document, miss information or apply the wrong treatment. Our review process is designed to catch errors, but it cannot catch everything. That is why your firm's review is essential.

Your firm's responsibility

The firm that engages us must review all work before it is used. Your firm is responsible for:

  • checking the work is complete and correct
  • the advice your firm gives to its clients
  • anything sent to your clients
  • anything filed with IRD or lodged with the ATO

We never file or lodge

We never file or lodge anything with Inland Revenue (IRD) in New Zealand or the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Your firm decides what is filed or lodged, and does it.

Our emails

We work by email only. You email us, and we reply by email. We do not take phone calls or use WhatsApp or other messaging apps. Keeping everything in writing is how we keep our prices low, and it gives you a clear record of every job. Our emails are handled by AI.

Australia: tax and BAS agents

For Australian clients, your firm's registered tax agent or BAS agent remains responsible for anything lodged with the ATO. This includes tax returns and BAS. Your agent must supervise and check the work before it is lodged, as required by the Tax Practitioners Board.

New Zealand

For New Zealand clients, your firm remains responsible for any return or information filed with IRD, including returns filed under your firm's tax agent listing.

What we do not do

  • We do not give tax or financial advice to your clients.
  • We do not contact or approach your clients.
  • We do not file or lodge returns.

Telling your clients

Your firm must tell its clients, in writing, that it uses an AI service provider and that their information may be processed overseas. Your engagement letter is a good place to do this. You also need their permission to share their information with us.

In New Zealand, your authority to act from each client should allow their Inland Revenue information to be shared with a service provider like us. In Australia, APES 305 requires you to tell clients in writing when work is outsourced. See Your firm's obligations for more detail.
